Gubi’s MR01 Initial chair, designed by Mathias Steen Rasmussen, is a unique lounge chair with influences from mid-century Danish design as well as Rasmussen's background in cabinetmaking. The Initial chair has a uniquely shaped, gently inclined solid wood frame, but what makes the chair even more unique is its seat material: the seat and backrest are hand-woven from 90 meters of rope using a method developed by Rasmussen. Skillful, visible joints complete the chair’s organic charm.
 
Rasmussen originally designed the Initial chair for his own home: the aim was to design a lounge chair that would also be suitable for meditation. The tight rope weave gives the Initial chair not only an extremely lightweight look but also a sense of floating when sitting. The chair's fascinating form language and graceful, airy construction make it a perfect lounge chair for both small spaces and large living rooms and lobbies. Over time, the chair will develop a beautiful patina.
